Age Group Information
When swimmers compete during a regular season meet, their races are a specific distance based on their age. The distances are:
- Ages 6&Under | 15 yards
- Ages 7-10 | 25 yards (the full length of the lap pool)
- Ages 11-18 | 50 yards
In order to make the team this year, swimmers must be able to safely swim their competition distance unassisted during the Freestyle event at the Time Trial meet on Tuesday, June 7. This gives all swimmers two weeks of practice to prepare for swimming their respective distances.
Age groups are determined by a swimmer’s age on June 1. They are split as follows:
- Ages 6 & Under
- Ages 7-8
- Ages 9-10
- Ages 11-12
- Ages 13-14
- Ages 15-18
If your swimmer does/can make the team, but decides to not do swim team, you must notify the head coach via email on or before Tuesday, June 7.
Eligibility
We often get the question, “Should my child be on the swim team? I don’t know if they are ready.” Here are the things that we consider when answering that question::
If your child is 6 years old or younger, they should be…
- ☑️ ...comfortable jumping from the edge into the pool
- ☑️ ...willing to fully submerge their face in the water
- ☑️ ...comfortable being in water that is 4+ feet deep
Additionally, swimmers that are between the ages of 7 and 8 should also be...
- ☑️ ...able to swim across the pool unassisted
And swimmers that are ages 9 to 18 should be…
- ☑️ ...able to swim multiple laps without stopping
If your child can do those things, we encourage them to come out for the team! When we get to our Time Trial Meet, if your child cannot swim the distance required to make the team, you will not be charged for joining the swim team.
